What is Hospitality & Tourism Education

The world economy has changed drastically after the World War II. The emergence of what Peter Drucker calls the “Knowledge worker” has created far-reaching implications for postsecondary education. During the past two decades, hospitality & tourism has become one of the most important industries of the world. It is the largest single earner of global revenues among all industries. It is also the largest employer of  manpower. Tourism contributes to 10.7% of world wide employment.

In India, Tourism is estimated to give direct employment to 91 lakhs persons and indirect employment is estimated at about 124 lakh, which together make up for a substantial segment of our total workforce in the country. In the coming years, the hotel catering and tourism industry shall stand out to be the single largest industry in the world, its dynamism heralding pivotal changes in career options.

Largest Scale promotion of tourism and rapid industrial progress gave a boost to hoteliering which is basically a service industry. One can find job in star hotels, restaurants, air lines, cruise liner, floating motels, call center etc. This wide range of hotels provides ample scope for employment or even setting up of one’s own establishment, candidates should have out going personality, organizing and administrative ability, communication skills, ability to motivate staff, interest in people and ability to work under pressure, tact and sense of humour. Travel and tourism is considered to be the largest foreign exchange earner among all industries and provides direct employment to lakh of people.
